| On 21st March 1896, the day after the 2nd Matabele Rebellion broke out, this cover was posted from Umtali and addressed to Cape Town. The refreshment station at Pongo’s Store, between Gwelo and Bulawayo had been attacked by Matabele rebels and being unable to stop & replace the mule team, the occupants of the mail coach were inevitably forced to abandon it near the Shangani River & proceeded on foot. The coach was looted by the rebels and mail was scattered over the veld. Six weeks later some mail was retrieved and this cover, with the adhesive washed off due to the rainy season, was delivered to Bulawayo and endorsed in red ink as follows: "Recovered from mail stolen by the Rebels/ at Shangani River, CR, PO Bul." (The initials ‘CR’ are those of C. Ross, assistant Postmaster in Bulawayo.) The cover was delivered to Cape Town where it was backstamped G.P.O. CAPE TOWN/ CAPE COLONY/ JU 24/ 96 squared circle cancellation, just over 3 months after being posted. |

| Why do people collect stamps and where is the great interest? There are many reasons but one of the big attractions is finding an unusual item, gaining possession of it and then discovering something new about it through research. I guess most people see stamp collecting as simply that, getting hold of a bunch of stamps and putting them into an album, but the interest goes far deeper than that and one can become a stamp collector quite by default. Allow me to give you an example: We all know from the many bikers that visit Villiersdorp and Franschhoek over the weekends on the “breakfast run” that motor cycles are tremendously popular and they attract people of all ages. As they say: Once a bike fan, always a bike fan! For many, it is not merely the motor cycle itself, as one can hardly afford to collect them unless one has a huge bank balance available. But motor bikers will attend motor bike rallies, motor bike shows, motor bike racing and purchase motor bike magazines, just to keep themselves up to date with new innovations and trends, besides motor bike history. And that’s where stamp collecting can become attractive. By collecting motor bikes on stamps, one can assemble a wonderful collection, without having to fork out a fortune for every new model that comes onto the market. They have been featured on stamps right back to the early days when they first became a useful mode of transport and delivery. Acquiring the stamp is part of the fun as one may have to search across many websites to find them, but researching their history, not only of the issue itself but the motor cycles shown, can be a lot of fun. The cover scanned shows a stamp used on an advertising envelope, and the subject matter is in this case, Motor Cycles. It tells an interesting story. Firstly, there was a Norton Motor Cycle Agency & Service Station in East London way back in 1925, and it was obviously established well before then. Secondly, there was a South African Motor Traders Association as well, which this dealer, Barnes Garage, belonged to. There must have been a ready market to warrant having advertising envelopes printed and it must be remembered that at that time, print was about the only way to get yourself and your product known in the general market. Advertising envelopes were and still are often used by many companies. This particular cover was carried on the first return flight of the SA Government Experimental Air Mail Service, which was initiated between Cape Town and Durban in 1925, in order to prove the reliability and advantages of air transport, to ascertain to what extent the public would support such a facility, and to obtain statistical information regarding civil aviation in South Africa. The first flight took place on Monday 2nd March 1925, starting at 7:40am from Wynberg, Cape Town, with scheduled stops at Oudtshoorn, Port Elizabeth, East London and ending in Durban. Due to good tail winds, the total flight took 8 hours, 15 minutes, arriving just before 4pm the same day. The first return flight took off on Thursday 5th March 1925, leaving at just before 1pm and stopping overnight in East London, resuming the next day at 6:40am, via the same schedules stops and arriving in Cape Town at just before 2pm, a total flying time of 9 hours, 38 minutes. This cover was carried on this particular return flight, showing a clear EAST LONDON/ 5 MAR 1925 postal cancellation plus the required special bilingual S.A. AIR MAIL/ 5 MAR 1925 hand-stamp. It bears a normal 1d stamp for postage, plus a 3d AIR POST stamp to cover the airmail costs, the latter being one of a set of 4 stamps, especially issued for this service. Interestingly enough, this was the first set of stamps produced in the Union of SA since 1910. It was issued in advance of the inaugural flights on 26th February 1925 and it was printed by the Cape Times Ltd. Besides the Motor Cycle interest that this cover bears, it also has many other attractive attributes and it would naturally appeal to a collectors of Aircraft and of historical First Flights. What makes this item so special is that it is in all probability unique. It was recently sold off my website and I seriously doubt I will ever see it again, as it was bought by a collector in Greece. Who said motor bikes can’t fly? |
